‘A ray of hope’: As neighborhood rebuilds, south Minneapolis high school celebrates its seniors

The school hosted a drive-thru, socially distanced graduation ceremony for its 124 seniors, with faculty and staff saluting their students' accomplishments from a perch atop the building. It was a welcome afternoon of hope, celebration and looking to the future, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and just days after looting and fires destroyed nearby businesses in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

Cristo Rey High School Grads Honored In Mpls. Drive-Thru Commencement

When a pandemic closed schools back in March, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s 124 seniors didn’t know what spring would bring. Then came the destruction and strife just doors away. Out from the grips of chaos and upheaval sprang creativity. On Saturday, each graduating senior was honored at a drive-thru commencement ceremony.

Please join us on Friday, June 5th for a VIRTUAL event to celebrate the Class of 2020! This event will feature a special blessing for the Class of 2020 delivered by Fr. John Paul SJ, the announcement of the winners of Cristo Rey’s excellence awards and will celebrate each member of the Class of 2020 as they share their plans for college and beyond!

Simpson Housing Honors Senior Intern, Kimberly St. Julien

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School - Twin Cities and Simpson Housing Services are South Minneapolis neighbors. Amid unrest in the community, we will work together to lift up the neighborhood with integrity, hope and justice. Senior, Kim, has worked at Simpson Housing for all four years at Cristo Rey.

Update on Current Situation in South Minneapolis

Due to the rioting activity in South Minneapolis, our school had four lobby windows broken. However, no one entered the building and no looting took place. We were very fortunate compared to many of our neighbors.

Pathway to Success is Going Virtual on May 20

Traditionally, we celebrate our college success at our College Acceptance Ceremonies, Graduation, and at our annual Pathway to Success event. Due to COVID-19 and recent public health declarations, there is a restriction of public gatherings. Therefore, the Pathway to Success event scheduled for May 20 will now be held virtually.
