One of the activities offered at Cristo Rey gives students the opportunity to create wooden boats using traditional hand-crafting techniques. In the spring, the students will proudly launch their crafts on Lake Calhoun, capping months of hard work. On this page, visitors will be able to track the progress of the boat building and get a first hand look at the techniques used to create them.

In September, our students started building the boats, beginning with the paddles.

October 8: The top frame of the boat has been completed.

October 8: Students prepare a special adhesive to thin strips of wood that will serve as the outer hull of the boat.

October 29: Instructor Phil Winger shows students how to drill the holes needed to begin forming the hull of their boat. Check back soon for more updates!

December 10: With the hull finished, clamps are placed around the boat while the glue dries. In a few short months, the boats will be ready for their maiden voyage.
