On Tuesday, September 20, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
hosted a fundraiser with its neighbor organization, Urban Ventures, entitled,
"The Dream That´s Working." Two student speakers and a Hire4Ed
Work-study supervisor spoke at the event highlighting the impact that Cristo
Rey Jesuit H.S. has made in their lives.
Special guest, Earvin
"Magic" Johnson, spoke to nearly 1,000 guests and students
emphasizing the importance of access to a quality education for urban youth in
order to revitalize Urban America. He told students, "You may be poor, but
don't have poor dreams!" Magic identified with the background of Cristo
Rey Jesuit H.S. students saying, "I was them." Magic also shared that
he, too, is a Cristo Rey kid. The community center where he played basketball
growing up in Lansing, Michigan was named Cristo Rey.
