The Cristo Rey Jesuit High School class of 2012 is well on its way to matching the success of those who graduated before them; 100% of the class of 2011 was accepted to college or the military. As of January 13, 2012, the class of 2012 passed the half way point in meeting that same goal of 100% college acceptance. But this acceptance letter arrived special delivery. A representative from Xavier University hand delivered an acceptance letter to Senior Juan Acosta, Jr. to make him 30th of 56 seniors to be accepted to a four-year university.

We were infected with the college acceptance on October 28, when representatives from St. Mary’s University in Winona came to our school for the day to interview and accept 13 seniors. Since then, seniors have been hard at work with college counselor, Ms. Micki O’Flynn, filling out applications and polishing essays.

The waiting game continues as some seniors have yet to hear from the schools to which they applied. Regardless, they continue to move forward. January 11 was senior financial aid night. Seniors and their parents began their online Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Forty-four community volunteers along with faculty and staff were on hand to assist families most of whom were completing the form for the first time. Correct FAFSA completion is vital in maximizing the amount of financial aid that many of our families will need to in order meet the goal of college graduation.
