Jessica Niola-Lazo

from

Ceridian Corporation!

Hire4Ed Work-Study Employee of the Month -  April

On the morning of Friday, May 4, Jessica was recognized by the Cristo Rey Jesuit H.S. community as the student-worker Employee of the Month. To her surprise, her family, as well as her supervisors, Karen Huss and Sandy Krause (pictured above with Jessica) from Ceridian were there to celebrate her achievement.

Jessica's supervisors said when nominating her. "Jessica has been an amazing addition to our team. She recently took on even more responsibility, taking a lead role in publishing 'Hey U!', our electronic internal employee newsletter. Determined to help make this major initiative successful, Jessica taught herself how to use Publisher, Microsoft Word’s publishing software, and learned how to create banners and edit photos using PhotoShop, Adobe’s creative tool. With Jessica’s contributions, our monthly newsletter is a must-read for all employees.

"Jessica works efficiently, with great attention to detail. She is able to quickly grasp what’s needed and continues to surpass our expectations. In fact, this is our second year working with Jessica and we specifically requested her help. We are so impressed with her abilities, we’ve asked her to stay on this summer and work with us a few days each week.

"In addition to her work on 'Hey U!', Jessica always happily jumps in to help with filing, coordinating volunteer events or whatever is needed. She is extremely polite and respectful of everyone. We are so fortunate to work with Jessica and look forward to continuing our partnership."

Last week, a client noted to me [with a huge smile] that "gosh, I just think it's so great that this student knows my name." He takes the time and effort to get to know our clients and their stories and ultimately helps us to ensure that our clients' needs are met to the best of our organizations' ability. For that, recognition is deserved. “

"What the brain does a lot, the brain gets good at." - Dr. David Walsh

As part of Hire4Ed's commitment to supporting supervisors, Dr. David Walsh visited Cristo Rey Jesuit High School on September 27 for a seminar titled, "The Adolescent Brain Goes to Work."  Dr. Walsh is one of the world's leading authorities on children, teens, parenting, and the impact of technology on children's health and development.  His presentation at Cristo Rey was geared especially toward supervisors on how they can best support Cristo Rey students and make them more productive employees as students navigate a variety of workplace environments, often for the first time.

Below are several important questions and answers that came up during Dr. Walsh's presentation.

What is the best way to connect with my student worker?

Caring adult connections are very important to adolescents.  It makes them feel safe.  They like to feel included.  As human beings we are wired to connect.  If an adolescent is excluded, it feels painful.  Ways to make a student feel connected is to:

1) Use their name when talking to them.  2) Give them good eye contact.  3) High fives.

Bottom Line: When a student feels safe, they perform better.

How to communicate with my student worker?

You can’t over communicate with a teenager.  “I am not saying you are not doing a good job.  You simply can do this better.  We work in a company in which our employees are constantly trying to improve.”  After feedback like this, ask the adolescent what he/she heard?

How do I engage a shy student worker?

During adolescence, boys are quieter than girls.  Boys are more non-verbal.  To get adolescents to talk, establish a personal connection and then ask open ended questions.  Frame questions to encourage sharing.

How do I know if a student understands the work assignment?

Multi-step directions are difficult because of what is going on in their brains.  Tell them the directions, ask them to write it down and repeat back to you the assignment.

How do I keep my student work motivated?

Focus on effort, not talent.  By doing this you emphasize what they can control.
